Quotes: Prince Avalanche director David Gordon Green
David Gordon Green began his career with a quartet of poetic indie dramas (George Washington, All the Real Girls, Undertow, Snow Angels) that made him a critic’s darling and earned comparisons to Terrence Malick. Green then spent a half-decade making low-brow studio stoner comedies (Pineapple Express, Your Highness, The Sitter). Imagine Malick following Days of Heaven with the Harold and Kumar trilogy and you get a sense of the incongruity.
With Prince Avalanche, Green attempts to reconcile those disparate halves of his career. Shot in the span of 16 days, this remake of the 2011 Icelandic movie Either Way features a minimalist plot and stripped-down aesthetic (the production didn’t use any film lights), but also a pair of man-children in arrested development (played by Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsh) and an absurdist sense of humor.
The film, which finds Rudd and Hirsh re-painting the yellow traffic lines along an isolated stretch of Texas state park, opened in limited release last week.
