The movie posters of the Summer of ’84

Summer of 1984

When the Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theaters tonight and inaugurates the summer movie season, it will mark 30 years since Hollywood celebrated one of its most successful summer campaigns. The summer of 1984. The summer of Ghostbusters and Gremlins – which opened the same day. The summer of The Karate Kid and Revenge of the Nerds. The Pope of Greenwich Village and Once Upon a Time in America. Red Dawn and Purple Rain. The summer PG-13 was born.

So enjoy this stroll down memory lane, a stroll that – for anyone alive during the summer’s original incarnation – will undoubtedly include the muttering of, ‘Ghostbusters was 30 years ago? Christ, when I did get old.’

Fantastic post. The Last Starfighter! The Neverending Story! Revenge of the Nerds! The Gods Must Be Crazy! What a summer that was! If they were all showing today, I might try to catch about fifteen of them in the theaters.

And I’m not completely sure about this, but I think we got old about ten years ago.
